Bystanders

A Film Visual Publicity Advocating Reflection on Campus Issues

Bystanders is a 12-minute short film created by first-year students specialising in Graphic Communication at Shih Hsin University. The film earned the second-place distinction in a rigorous campus-wide competition, competing against 15 other compelling short films.

In "Bystanders," we undertake an exploration of bystander responsibility, particularly within the context of group bullying in the campus environment. The film poses a crucial question: Do those who remain silent when witnessing the oppression of a vulnerable individual by a more dominant figure share responsibility for the resulting harm? The central character, a senior high school student who has endured prolonged peer bullying, embarks on a journey culminating in the creation of tetrodotoxin. The film concludes with a powerful statement, "You are all pufferfish!" Tetrodotoxin, initially a defence mechanism for pufferfish, serves as a poignant symbol of how the silence of bystanders can inflict harm on the oppressed. The film aims to stimulate introspection in the audience regarding their roles in such complex scenarios.

Bystanders
CONCEPT OF KEY VISUAL

The film's key visual elements encompass logo, imagery, illustration, and a singular promotional slogan, "When silence becomes the last defence." These elements collectively contribute to crafting an immersive atmosphere that mirrors the film's sombre mood. Notable visual components from the narrative, such as the young male protagonist submerged in a scenario resembling drowning and the overflowing fishbowl brimming with fragmented thoughts, seamlessly reinforce the film's central themes. The pufferfish image embedded in the logo serves as a potent symbol akin to a tattoo, leaving a lasting imprint on the viewer's psyche.

We appreciate your interest in "Bystanders." This cinematic endeavour not only entertains but also encourages critical reflection on an important societal issue.
