Ultra-Futuristic Wanhua: DJ Playlist Co-Creation is the fourth and final public event of the VESSEL OF FUTURE COMMUNE Project, aiming to "establish relationships between creators and local residents" and "create an opportunity to deeply understand the project." This aligns with the project's third phase, focusing on "Collaboration / Co-Creation."
“What interesting things could happen in Wanhua at night?” Ultra-Futuristic Wanhua: DJ Playlist Co-Creation invited young people from different regions and local Wanhua residents to step into the historic market building late at night, exploring the night scene and local identity through an open DJ performance with music and specially crafted cocktails.
Three DJs for the night, also project creators, included Japanese augmented sound experience artist Riku Murakami and Taiwanese band Mong Tong’s Hom Yu and Jiun-Chi Hung. Their sets were inspired by a month of observation in Wanhua, with Murakami’s custom sound equipment providing a unique audio experience. Each DJ took the audience on a musical journey, capturing their vision of Wanhua’s ultra-futuristic night scene. Toward the end, three tracks representing the audience’s vision of Wanhua's future were played, and everyone ended the journey with Wu Bai's "Last Dance."

Bringing Together Creators on the Same Wavelength to Enhance Each Other's Expertise
Japanese augmented sound experience artist Riku Murakami and Taiwan's band Mong Tong both specialise in retrieving and reinterpreting forgotten elements of local history, translating them into modern expressions unique to their culture. Both maintain an open mindset toward cross-cultural exchange and hands-on experimentation. Riku’s expertise in audio technology paired with Mong Tong’s music production skills created a natural synergy, fostering a comfortable atmosphere on event night and continuing to inspire their new projects.
Offering New Possibilities for Local Nightlife Entertainment, Fostering Exchange Between Locals and Visitors
The event collaborated with WANderLAND HIRUNOMI, a newly established izakaya within the U-mkt, offering local residents and young visitors a fresh way to experience Wanhua’s night time culture. As the first DJ event at this new izakaya, featuring Riku's custom speakers and Mong Tong’s globally recognized DJ sets, the event attracted over 100 participants in just one week of promotion.
Designing Simple, Engaging, and Meaningful Interactions, Yielding Insightful Feedback Within an Immersive Setting
We designed an interaction for participants to respond to the theme "Ultra-Futuristic Wanhua" by sharing their vision of Wanhua’s future through song requests. The DJ selected three songs to be played live, reflecting participants’ interpretations. Interestingly, many requests shared a common vision of "containing suppressed, intense emotions" for Wanhua’s future.
