Crossing the River: Zhou Yue's Photography Exhibition brings to light the captivating imagery captured by Chinese photographer Zhou Yue during his remarkable solo expedition to North Korea in 2017. Hailing from Dandong, a city separated from North Korea by the Yalu River, Zhou Yue's daily encounters with North Korean workers in his hometown fueled his innate curiosity. This curiosity eventually inspired him to embark on a journey to their enigmatic homeland. Throughout his travels in North Korea, he became acutely aware of the pervasive presence of "propaganda banners" that seemed to envelop the daily lives of North Korean citizens, akin to invisible walls.
Through the lens of his camera, Zhou Yue documented the authentic and unfiltered aspects of North Korean life. His goal is to prompt viewers to ponder the profound implications of the relentless emphasis on sovereignty and governance. These themes are prominently featured in the imagery he captured during his expedition.
